What is rare earth magnetostrictive alloy?

And what purpose could it serve?

Magnetostriction phenomenon includes Joule effect and Villari effect which are caused by an applied magnetic field. Whilst Joule effect implies a change in length in the material, Villari effect a change in the stress state. The change is so precise that gives it a wide range of applications in the areas of ultrasonics, sensors, audio, and transducers.

Among these materials, rare earth magnetostrictive alloy is the most effective. Firstly, it was developed in the USA, known as Terfenol-D.

From sonar, it is used in products such as actuators, seismic tools, high-powered ultrasonics, fuel injection and vibration control.
